How to check your ETA Status

After you successfully applied for your ETA, you can check your status using the official government website and your ETA Grant Number.

You just have to enter the following details:

  • Type of document you used to apply for your ETA (in most cases this will be a regular passport).
  • Reference type (you have to choose “Visa Grant Number”).
  • Your ETA Grant Number (you can find this on your confirmation PDF).
  • Date of birth.
  • Document number (your passport number).
  • Country of document (the country that issued your passport).

After entering all required data, you will be able to perform an application status check. You can also print out your status page.

Important: The printed version of your ETA status can be helpful during check-in at the airport and while passing border control. Authorities will always check your passport for a valid ETA connected to it. This means the print out will not serve as proof for your ETA status however, the printed out ETA confirmation can help speed things up in some cases.

What is Australia ETA? Why should you apply for ETA and not for a traditional visa for Australia?

With the introduction of ETA, Australia has adapted its entry control and visa issuance system to that of other countries such as the USA and Canada. For citizens of certain countries, it is possible to apply online for a visa for tourist and business purposes. To be precise, ETA is not a full visa. It is rather an electronic entry permit for citizens who do not require a visa due to their origin. At the same time, travelers who can apply for an ETA can still apply for a regular Australian visa. However, the process of applying for an Australian visa is more complicated and expensive and few travellers choose to apply voluntarily. This is also due to the fact that the Australian ETA offers many freedoms.

The maximum stay of 90 days is also sufficient for longer stays, the ETA is valid for one year. An Australian visa must still be applied for by all citizens who cannot participate in the ETA program, there is no choice. In addition to the longer processing time, the price of a regular Australian visa is significantly higher. When applying for such a visa, applicants must expect a processing fee of up to several hundred Australian dollars.

Conclusion: ETA is a replacement for a classic Australian visa. Those who can apply for an ETA are exempt from the visa requirement. In many forums, media and commercial offers the ETA is called Australia visa, this is not really correct. A visa for Australia can also be applied for by citizens who are entitled to an ETA.
